Triple crown 2016

104 cars packed into the pits that Sunday morning and that included the two biggest classes which was 29 SC Modifieds, and 22 Sc Late Models, who were ready to do battle and try to start the 3 race series on a high note!

First on the schedule for the day was the single car qualifying for the SC Late Models. After qualifying, Brian Laurent would find himself on top of the board as fast qualifier, with a best lap of 5.436, but it wasnt a cake walk as Jeff Fisher wasn’t far behind with his #73 who had a fast lap of 5.540 Once the 22 cars were all qualified, it was time to set the heat races and get going with the qualifying heats for the other 6 classes.

After 2 rounds of heat races for the SC Late Models, Brian Laurent would win his first heat race, then survive the invert and win the 2nd heat race, keeping him on the top spot going into the A-main event. After the D-Main through the B-Main races were complete, we had the 8 car A-Main field out of 22 cars.

As we got closer to the A-main, the skies started to darken up and the radar was filling in around the track so it was decided to switch the race day schedule around to try and get this race in. So the 8 cars filtered onto the race track and lined up. Since Brian Laurent was the TQ for the day, he got to roll the dice to figure out the invert for the start. He ended up rolling a 5 which put him starting 5th and gave Paul Peterson who was originally starting 5th, the pole position for the 100 lap A-Main.

As the tone went off with the 8 cars rolling through corner 4 in a double file start, and thunder in the background, Paul Peterson would waste no time to get out front, with Jeff Fisher and Dana Zenil right behind, until Paul got tangled up on lap 11 and handed the lead over to Jeff Fisher with Ryan Copet now 2nd and Paul Peterson falling to 3rd. The handling then started to go away on Ryan’s #77 around lap 17 when Paul would skate by to 2nd and Dana Zenil 3rd until Dana decided to rally towards the front and pass up Paul on lap 25 and set his sights on the leader of Jeff Fisher. Meanwhile, Brian Laurent was patiently waiting to come to the front after he got tangled in the opening laps almost putting him a lap down. By lap 30 he found himself back in 4th place and on the back bumper of the #83 of Paul Peterson, at this time the top 4 drivers were all within one straightaway of each other, and the rain was starting to fall on the raceway, giving the racers a little more edge as they didn’t know when this race could be over! Jeff Fisher and Dana Zenil would battle for the lead spot as Paul Peterson and Brian Laurent were running side by side with Paul on the high side and they both were catching the leaders, until lap 55 when Dana and Jeff would get together allowing Paul and Brian to take over the top 2 spots still racing side by side for a lap until Paul got the run off of corner 4 and would take the lead, but that was short lived after he got tangled up with a lap car and Brina Laurent would find a little room on the bottom and take the lead on lap 59 with the rain starting to dampen the track to where it wasn’t race able anymore on lap 61 when the race was called and Brian Laurent would take his DE Racing, Victory Signs, MX Trophies, Fantom Racing, North Star Casino, Sippel Speedshop #17 to victory lane, in the eventful, rain shortened A-Main! Paul Peterson would still hold on to 2nd, with Dana Zenil finishing 3rd. After leading 44 laps, Jeff Fisher would finish 4th with Jason Walecki, Marcus Mcauly, Ryan Copet and Sam Yerke rounding out the field.

Jacob Harreman would claim his 2nd A-main win in only his 2nd start in the Amateur Class and Jeff Fisher would run the top side all race long to claim his 3rd A-Main win in the Sprint car class! Brian Genske wanted to follow suit in the Midwest Sport Mod Class and took his #87 to victory lane for the 3rd time in 2016 as well!

The Sportsman, Open 4×4’s and SC Modified classes got rained out, so those A-Mains will be ran right away in the morning of the next race day as make up races.
