Traxxas Rustler VXL Pro-Line Performance Upgrades

Just when you think it couldn’t get any better along comes the Rustler VXL! Updated with all of Traxxas’s latest technological advances, the Rustler VXL is perhaps one of the best all around 1:10 RTR trucks out there.  Even better, The Rustler VXL shares many of the suspension components for the Slash 2WD Short Course truck including the suspension components which interchange from This truck to Slash 2WD platforms. This is great news for you Rustler VXL fans and you can upgrade your truck to a much improved handling version with a wider track, and more adjustable suspension by installing the 6062-00 Pro-Trac Suspension Kit onto your Rustler VXL

The 6062-00 Pro-Trac Suspension Kit  will increase the track width of your Rustler VXL from the stock 12.25” to a staggering 13+”! You can upgrade your Rustler VXL for much improved handling with a wider track while allowing for more adjustability of your Rustler VXL suspension for just about any type of terrain condition!

Installation:

The installation of the 6062-00 Pro-Trac Suspension Kit is pretty much the same as the installation on the Slash 2wd  . For some visual aid you can go to the How To Videos section. There are 2 videos on the Slash 2WD  covering the front and the other covering the rear installation. All suspension components and adjustments install and adjust in the same manner. All components in this kit are used on your Rustler VXL with the exception of the Pro-Trac SC wheels. These will not be used.

While Updating the Suspension, I decided to add a few more of our latest Performance parts. The stock Hinge pins were removed and replaced with our 6096-00 Pro-2 Hinge Pin Set. I also removed the stock Transmission and updated it with our 6092-00 Performance Transmission.

For the suspension I installed our 6063-00 Front and 6063-01 Rear Powerstroke Shocks. To finish off the suspension Upgrade, I added our 6097-00 Front and 6098-00 Pro-2 Clamping Hex’s and a set of 6100-00 4mm serrated wheel Lock Nuts.

Most everything is straight up bolt on with the exception of the body posts and their positioning. The Rustler VXL uses a slightly different method of mounting the body so some slight modifications were required. For this reason, I added a 6070-00  Slash 2WD Extended Body Mount Kit. This allowed me to keep the same body mount holes on the front and give me the option of selecting different body heights for the front nose.

The Pro-Trac Rear shock tower does not have the Rustler VXL’s stock center body mount post but you can easily add the center post by using one of the steel posts from the Rustler battery strap kit 3727A which can be purchased for around $3.00 at a hobby shop. Drill a hole In the center of the shock tower that is slightly smaller than the threads; then screw in the new steel pin post allowing it to self-tap it’s own threads.

If you want to use one of the thumb washers for the center rear post, you will need to get an M4x14mm button head Allen screw.

To Mount the Bolt for the rear thumb washer option, I used a small pin drill to mark a centerpilot hole in the shock tower where the OEM Rear Center post would normally be. Be sure to drill straight an level through the shock tower top. This will insure your stud sticks up straight out of the shock tower top. I then followed that up with a 3/16 Drill to drill my stud hole. Thread / screw the M4 bolt through the bottom side of the shock tower to create your mounting stud. You may need some spacers on the top of the shock tower stud just under the body to achieve the correct Height.  For body spacers, I used the spare pistons from the shock parts bag. Drill out the center holes to 5/32″ and they will thread on loosely to the 4m bolt stud. Place one of the o-rings included from the thumb washer set over them and you are good to go. In this photo you can see how the completed rear body post modification looks with the body off

You can also add the 6067-00 Performance Steering Kit to your Rustler VXL. All though this was originally designed for the Slash 2WD, you can make it work on your Rustler VXL with only a couple of minor changes. The steering kit mounts up in the same position as the factory steering crank. On the Rustler VXL, you will need to replace the 2x front larger head servo mounting screws with some smaller traditional head type screws. The larger pan head type screws will hit on the steering arm and cause binding if not replaced. Finally you will need to replace the stock Servo Save with a short arm solid servo arm. If you are using the stock Traxxas Servo, any aftermarket arms made for a Futaba type servo will work.

Wheel and Tire Options:

One of the benefits of the Pro-Trac system is you will be able to use the same offset rims on front and rear. This allows you to run our 2729-01, 2729-03 or 2729-11 2.8 Desperado Wheels on both the front and rear (Same Offset).

We’ve also Expanded our 2.8 Tire section in the past year. Here is a list of 2.8 Tires that will fit any of the 2.8 Desperado wheels and or the Stock 2.8 Traxxas Wheels.

2.8 Series Tires with Traxxas Style Bead: 1172-00 Road Rage 2.8 Street Truck Tires, 1173-00 Badlands2.8 All Terrain Truck Tires*, 1175-00 Dirt Hawg 2.8 All Terrain Truck Tires, 1186-00 Sand Paw 2.8 Sand Truck Tires, 1192-00 Masher 2.8 All Terrain Truck Tires*.

*Gearing Change possibly required Due to Tires Larger OAD over the stock tires smaller OAD.

Finally I added our new 3391-00 BullDog Clear Body. It fits the truck very nice and is very rigid. I dressed it up with a Christmas type pain scheme (racy but not gaudy) and went with a modified touring car wing in the back to keep with the BullDog Body’s Aerodynamic theme.
