I’ve always enjoyed the Rally car segment of RC building various versions over the years so naturally when I saw this latest offering from Traxxas, I knew I had to check it out. The car is everything I expected and a little more. The 7407 Rally uses the same Bathtub Chassis / Drive line components from the newer 6804R Slash 4×4 Platinum and has updated body mounts and a new high impact Rally Car style front bumper. The 7407 Rally has a beefy /well built look which handles and performs right out of the box, but who likes stock? Of course it needs some of our Pro-Line Performance Upgrades!
In digging through the parts bins, first thing I installed was a Pro-Trac suspension kit. You can use the Slash 4X4 6082-00 Kit, which comes with Pro-Trac Glue type wheels.
If you want to buy Pro-Trac Bead lock wheels separately, you can use the Stampede 4×4 kit #6083-00 which is the same just less wheels. Both kits have the same suspension components with the exception of minus the wheels in the 6083-00 kit.
For the camber and steering links, you can use the measurements from the Slash 4×4 Pro-Trac base set up sheet to get you started. This car does run allot more droop than a slash 4×4 so you will have to fine tune the camber links to get the correct camber once you have you have established your desired ride height.
The OEM shocks are the same basic plastic units found on most of Traxxas’s SC trucks. I removed these units and installed our 6063-00 Front and 6063-01 Rear Powerstroke SC Shocks. For the set up, I used the Red Upper Springs from the 6063-03 and 6063-04 spring assortments on both front and rear. For Oil, 60wt. was installed in the front and 50wt. in the rears.
Since this car requires more droop to the suspension, the shocks mounting points are out slightly further than what you would find on the Slash 4×4 (See attached photos). Don’t forget to pick up a 6063-05 Shock Universal Hardware kit when purchasing the shocks. This is an awesome kit that gives you more hardware options when mounting the shocks.
To finish off the suspension / drive line, I added some of our new 6098-00 PRO-2 Clamping Hex’s and 6100-00 4mm Serrated Wheel Lock Nuts. You can use both the 6098-00’s and the 6100-00’s on the front and rear of the Rally, Slash 4X4 and Stampede 4×4 trucks.
For tires, the Rally comes with a slightly smaller 4.07” OAD tire however, these tires have the same mounting beads as the traditional 2.2/3.0 SC ‘Short Course” tires. This allows you to use most any of our current SC tires. Note that in some cases you may need to trim additional material from the fender’s to clear larger OAD tires.
For wheels, you can use any of the Pro-Trac wheels when using the Pro-Trac suspension kit.
If you want to run our wheels and tires but have the stock suspension, the Rally uses the same offset as a stock Slash 4×4. Any wheels that fit the stock slash 4×4 suspensions will fit the new Rally’s stock suspension.
Since this vehicle shares many of the same specifications as the Slash 4×4, you will be able to use our 3367-00, 2012 Ford Focus ST Rally Body. This body looks awesome and will improve the detail of your Rally car.
For the Body attachment, I wanted to use our new thumb screw body caps. We currently do not make a kit for this car but that didn’t stop me from making my own.
I used the 6070-02 Thumb washer kit and modified the existing body posts. I cut the tops of the stock post off 1/16” just below the where the body pin holes are on the boss. I then used a small pin drill to mark a center hole. I followed that up with a 3/16 Drill to drill my stud hole. Remember – Only drill the hole as deep as half the length of the stud.
If you need a longer stud than what is provided in the package, you can take any M4 screw and cut it to the length you need.
On the rear shock tower post for the Rally Car, I drilled all the way through the horizontal part of the body post and screwed an M4 x 10mm Button head caps screw on each side in from the bottom. This secured the post and made for a solid anchor point on each side.
