Event: Vintage Nationals
Location: Bethel, CT
Classes Entered: 2wd Buggy, Stadium Truck
This past weekend I attended the Vintage Nationals held at the Bethel RC Race Arena in Bethel CT. For the past 4 years the Vintage Nationals, or Vonats as most people refer to it as, has been held indoors in nearby Waterbury. For this year race promoter Erich Reichert decided to bring the race outdoors to change things up a bit.
The Bethel Race Arena track crew did a great job designing a vintage friendly track that was fun to drive yet easy on the old vehicles and their limited suspension. The track was made up of a hard base with some loose soil on top that increased as the races went on. The surface held up well and the track crew quickly fixed any problem areas between rounds. Traction varied from med to low depending how much loose soil was on top.
After 4 rounds of qualifying I was TQ in both 2wd buggy and stadium truck. For the stadium truck main I was able to get away early while the others behind me battled it out. At the end of the 7 minute race I had lead every lap to take the win. In 2wd, a first turn pile up left me starting last. I slowly fought my way back up and had the leader in my sights, but ran out of time and finished 2nd.
Aside from practice, I was to use the same set of tires on both my truck and buggy all weekend. On truck I used M3 Holeshots front & rear with open cell foam and buggy I used M3 Holeshot front tires, M4 Tazers rear and the Pro-Line 1:10 Off-Road Wing.
